The Problem With 24/7

Hi,

We live in a relentless world that demands everything now and doesn’t make allowances for human needs. Is that really what we want?

The Problem With 24/7

It seems like quaint history to talk about the time when people depended on the sun for their main source of light, and organized their lives around weekly and annual cycles. When did the night shift and longer hours finally evolve into the 24-hours-a-day/seven-days-a-week economy of today? Everyone is multitasking; everything is go, go, go. You snooze, you lose, they say.

But is that lifestyle the healthiest? Even more, is it the way to real fulfillment? "The unexamined life is not worth living," said Socrates. Combine a lack of fulfillment with a lack of sleep, and you get burnout. "in a culture where work can be a religion, burnout is its crisis of faith," wrote Jennifer Senior in New York magazine.

Jesus Christ offers a different way. "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Part of that promise is fulfilled, for those who have the eyes to see it, through a day He made for man's benefit, the Sabbath (Mark 2:27). "God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested" (Genesis 2:3), and He wants us to enjoy the blessing of resting too! It's a natural rhythm of life that we need for our health and our fulfillment.
